Things Your Social Media Manager Dreads Hearing.

A relatively new phenomenon, social media positions are still not completely understood. As a social media manager/practitioner, you find yourself explaining what you do quite often, especially to the older generation. Educating people about what they wouldn’t necessarily know of, is good enough, but there are instances where people make statements that are enough to make even the most patient of social media practitioners’ skin crawl. We have a look at some of these, and hopefully stop you before, making the mistake of rubbing your manager up the wrong way.

If you still don’t see the point of social media, you have been living under a rock. In 2014, social media has changed how consumers and their favourite brands interact. The interwebs are full of examples and case studies of how it [social media] has completely changed the way us and consumers interact and communicate.

A Social Media or Community Manager has a set list of goals and responsibilities, like any other person with a job. With a number of important functions to fulfill, from monitoring your online community, to offering customer service, to developing and seeking out content to share and interact with your community with; contrary to popular belief, social managers don’t just sit back and stare at the computer screen. Customer has a complaint? They’re going to social media!

Your children may very well be on social networks. In fact, right now everybody is on social media, meaning your target market is PROBABLY on social media, so yes, they do pay me for that!

Can you plan for a national news story? Telling your community manager to “make it go viral” is tantamount to asking a person plan for a national news story. One cannot plan for their content to go viral. All you can control and plan for is producing content that is engaging; shareable and original, with the hopes that it catches on.

Social media isn’t just a trend, and if you are still thinking about it like that, you will miss out on a wonderful marketing opportunity. We live in a world that is constantly evolving, which means change is something that is bound to come – no one’s position is guaranteed. The evolution of technology has changed the way we live and we have no idea where we’ll be in the future.
